Free advice on what search engines are looking for in a website

Want more visitors to your website?

Getting more visitors to your website is logical, simple and easy to understand

What are search engines looking for in a website? How do you get ranked higher on Google? Let us tell you.

You need content to get high rankings on the search engines

We have so many clients who have seen how we are able to rank a website high on the search engines. However every single one of them, so far, has come back to us to say, "I thought you promised us that we would get onto the first page of Google, how come we are not there? That comment is usually after only a few weeks of launching the website!

Search engines have their own timing schedule and it has nothing to do with anyone else, the client cannot order it, the search engine expert cannot order it to go any faster than it does. Search engine rankings should be viewed as you would view a savings account at a bank. You only get a return on your investment after a certain amount of time has passed. You only get a better return on your investment with your savings account if you keep adding additional money to it.  In the case of search engines, in time you will get a higher ranking (with the correct professional advise) if you continue to add content to your web site you will get a much better ranking, more visitors and return on investment.

How many content pages do I need?
Let's give an example. We have a client (not a real client but a typical example), who has asked us to develop a web site and to get it listed on the first page of Google. The client manufactures "roof tiles" we get a Who we are, a single product page, and a contact us page from the client. That's a four page web site (including the home page) and we are expected to get it ranked highly on Google. This is not a meaningful content rich web site and will never get a suitable page position on Google.

Because we pitched ourselves as search engine experts we are doomed to failure. All, or most clients we serve, have not got a clue about how search engines work. They usually get very bored when you try to explain it. Search engines need content and that is the total answer to higher page rankings. If this client had given us information and cast his eye around for content we would have a much better chance of success.

How to feed a search engine content that will get your web site to appear high on the search engines

If you are going to have a small web site you need to build it to provide helpful advice to people. You need to look around for ideas. Take our "roof tiles" client, the content we can add could be "History of Roof Tiles" we could investigate how, when and where the first "roof tile" was manufactured, what materials were used, colours and other historical facts, we could build many many pages around this.

Search engines promote web sites that contain interesting, useful information and as a consequence web sites thrive on the results. Search engines don't care if you are the most successful corporate business in the world, on the World Wide Web the measure of your success is with your content. That is why we are all equal on the Internet a small company stands as good a chance of success as a large one. We say it's not how much money you have to spend on your web site, it is, how smart is it? Adding specific keyword rich content is the secret to web optimisation.

Your website is like your clothes and the style you choose. You don't project some else's image you project your own image. The Google search engine sees your website image and portrays it the way it sees it. According to how you dress it up. So if you want to be seen as the most stylish and important "weddings" website you have to dress it up as such. No one else can do this (unless you employ a dress designer in the case of what you wear or in your website's case a web designer) who will spend all their time doing the work. Employing a web designer /optimiser to do this work is the quickest way to achieving success on the search engines but can also be expensive as creating content and optimisation takes time. As an example to produce a single page on the EPNET website usually takes four to five hours. As the text has to be created but it also needs to be researched, written and possibly re-written a few times to ensure we say something that is useful or important but also has very specific keywords strategically placed on the page. We are aware of the power or pull of a properly written web page so we bother to spend the time required, it is critical to our survival. Each one of our pages does a specific job and attracts a specific segment of our market.

Web page monitoring, tracking your visitors

You also need to have a system in place that is capable of tracking the visitors to each of your web pages. You need it to see what people are typing into the search engines to find your website. The EPNET system displays what page and what was typed (keywords) to find that page. We monitor this information in real time. This information tells us if our page is successful or not (are we using the right keywords to attract the right target market). We may have keywords targeted correctly but our page may only display as number 10 on page One we analyse and discover what words are being used on our competitors pages (the ones that rank higher than us for the search term) and add new words to strengthen our page. New keywords keep cropping up so we look at our page again and ensure that important new keywords get added. Mostly this means that we have to write an additional paragraph or two, so the work is on-going. At least we know what every single page on our web site is doing and how valuable it is to us or not.

Getting more visitors means that first you have to give what search engines want.

Most people avoid this as they are too busy but spending time understanding search engines and making content with a call to action for your visitors and content to appeal to search engines is what is required. If you have a website ranking of 3 according to Google. You should strive to get a ranking of 6 then life becomes easier as you can really do less work and get better results. How do you get a ranking of 6 on Google? You expand (more content) on the top keywords they are currently ranking you on.

Content must appeal to your visitors and the search engines

It is not good enough to write for just your visitors. Most clients approach search engine optimisation according to what they want. Search engines work according to what you have (your content). The story is a bit like this: You are going fishing and you turn around to your partner and say "I want to catch the biggest fish in the lake". You may catch the biggest fish but the chances are that if you spend time in the preparation and lay down the correct "bait" you may just catch that fish.
In this sense the search engines will put you on the 1st page for your keyword phrases if you have done the preparation. It is all about content (as you know). People (your visitors) and search engines are what counts. What keyword phrases you get are according to your content. If you feature on the 1st page of Google for "fly-traps" but you really want to be on the 1st page of Google for "mouse-traps" then you had better go do some work on your content.
